Flagship Audi is further refined by a raft of technological advances and engine upgrades

  • International debut at Frankfurt Motor Show (September 12-22)
  • Even more power and greater fuel efficiency across entire model line-up
  • Increased use of cylinder on demand technology
  • Unique new MatrixBeam LED headlights improve safety
  • UK arrival scheduled for January 2014

Unadulterated luxury is delivered with even more élan and even greater efficiency in the new generation Audi A8, which makes its debut at next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show. The latest flagship combines revisions to its weight-optimised, predominantly aluminium body with a raft of technological advances including new MatrixBeam LED headlights and an upgraded line-up of EU6-compliant engines.

Built around the lightweight aluminium Audi Space Frame, the almost entirely aluminium body of the new generation A8 has been finessed by subtle resculpting of the bonnet, the single frame grille, the front bumper and the lower edge of the headlight units. At the rear, the design of the LED tail lamps has been revised and the bumper in all models bar the S8 now incorporates two rhomboid tail pipes. New chrome elements, new high gloss black window surrounds and five new colours also mark out the updated car.

The visual appeal, visibility and active safety of the new generation A8 can also now be enhanced by new optional headlights employing MatrixBeam Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology which sets new benchmarks.

The light and rain sensor, standard on all S6 models, automatically activates or deactivates the low-beam headlights and the windscreen wipers when required. This is particularly convenient, for instance, in unpredictable and poor weather, deteriorating light, entering tunnels, or simply, when it’s getting dark. And the rain sensor reacts to the strength of the rain – adapting the wiper interval accordingly – meaning you can just concentrate on driving.

Audi is the first manufacturer in the world to combine direct injection FSI technology with forced induction in volume production. The exceptionally broad torque plateau of the TFSI engine on the one hand permits a fuel-efficient driving style with few gearshifts, and on the other hand means that only light accelerator is needed to produce impressive thrust.

The Q7’s ESP provides an intelligent, swift response to difficult driving situations. The system is capable of braking individual wheels to the limits of their grip, whilst simultaneously adjusting the engine management settings, to ensure safe braking – whatever the conditions.

Value retention and desirability of sought-after Audi premium subcompact secure success in magazine’s new award category

According to the experts at Motor Trader the copper-bottomed choice in the current used car market is the Audi A1 premium subcompact hatchback, winner of the magazine’s first ever Used Car of the Year Award.

Presented this week at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel, the award is a new category added this year to the annual Motor Trader Awards, and all used cars on sale in 2012 were eligible for it. The magazine invited key stakeholders, including trade guides, auction houses and retailers, to nominate the cars that had impressed them most based on key criteria such as customer desirability and residual value performance. These nominations were then condensed into a shortlist from which the judges were asked to vote for an overall winner.

Commenting on the award, Motor Trader Editor Curtis Hutchinson said: “The A1 gave dealers an all-new entry model to pitch into the premium compact hatchback sector – it opened up a whole new customer base for Audi and proved to be an immediate success. The fact that it demands no compromises on quality versus the bigger Audis has worked in favour of its residuals, meaning that its desirability on the used market has since proved to be every bit as strong. It’s a highly coveted car and a very worthy winner of our first used award.”

Richard Starkey, Used Car Development Manager for Audi UK, added: “We’re really pleased with how the A1 is performing – the market really has embraced it as a fully-fledged Audi in condensed form, and that’s reflected in its residuals, in the level of new and used demand and in very encouraging awards like this.”

The Audi A1 is available in three-door and five-door Sportback forms priced from £13,790 OTR to £22,340 OTR. Engine highlights include the 105PS 1.6 TDI, which gives 74.3mpg capability with 99g/km CO2 output, and the 140PS 1.4 TFSI with Cylinder-on-Demand technology, offering up to 60.1mpg with 109g/km.
